MYMUSE
Way More Than a Metronome

ABOUT
In an era where customer-centricity is paramount, My Muse prioritizes user-centric design principles to ensure maximum accessibility and usability.
As the lead UI/UX designer at My Muse, I embarked on a mission to elevate the characterization and design process to new heights. Drawing from my extensive background in music and personal experience using metronomes, I recognized the inherent potential of our product from the outset. Our goal is to create an instrument that transcends the conventional notion of a metronome.
My Muse is a growing company dedicated to crafting an innovative metronome app tailored for musicians. While traditionally viewed as a tool for practicing rhythm, the vision at My Muse extends far beyond that.
The mission at My Muse is to develop a comprehensive tool that caters to musicians' needs with meticulous attention to detail. Our app offers a wide array of features, including beatless rhythm, gradual tempo adjustments, subdivision options down to the finest detail, and precise documentation of progress and practice times.

PERSONA

Michael Robertson, 35
A programmer and a drummer in a metal band.
His passion for drumming began at the age of nine when his brother introduced him to Iron Maiden, igniting a lifelong love for music. He promptly enrolled in drumming classes and has been playing ever since.
Today, Michael works as a programmer at a leading cybersecurity company. He lives with his wife, baby son, and two dogs, and ensures he exercises regularly. On weekends, he plays with his band at local clubs, breaking the routine of daily life.
As a drummer, Michael strives for precision, continuously challenging himself with increasingly complex songs. During practice sessions, he plugs in his headphones, connects to his metronome, and starts playing. While there are many free metronomes available, none offer the detailed resolution he seeks. Michael wants a metronome that can meticulously record his training sessions. He needs to track the duration of each exercise, the speeds he achieves, and how long he maintains peak performance. Additionally, he wants to review his weekly training data to set informed goals for the following week.

VISUAL LANGUAGE
During the design process, it became evident that the desired direction was a clean and modern aesthetic. The challenge lay in achieving a delicate balance that embodied a minimalistic design without appearing empty or lacking.
To achieve this, I incorporated components in a neumorphic style, providing depth while maintaining a clean and refined background. Extensive use of effects such as drop shadow, inner shadow, and blur added a three-dimensional quality to the components. Gradients were also employed to create depth and highlight light and shadow effects. Given that the application caters to musicians, I aimed to design components reminiscent of sound-related elements such as knobs and faders, while also utilizing typography commonly associated with digital devices.
To enhance visibility, strategic accents in a subtle purple hue were introduced to complement the overall aesthetic and provide contrast against the clean pastel background.

DESKTOP & TABLET
Although the application is primarily intended for mobile, we recognized the importance of offering a desktop version as well. This version allows users to explore the application's features on a larger screen while maintaining its clean and intuitive design. Giving users the flexibility to choose their preferred device enables them to tailor their experience to their specific needs.

PROCESS
From the outset of the design process, I understood the metronome page would be pivotal. With the scroll circle as a central feature, I carefully characterized the additional components intended for display. Through iterative experimentation, I arranged these elements on the screen to ensure user-friendly order, maintaining a clean and uncluttered design.
